Discover the EPFL School of Life Sciences where computation, engineering and the physical sciences stimulate and drive both our understanding and applications in biology. Located on the shores of Lake Geneva we offer a Bachelor and Master program in Life Sciences Engineering, a Master program in Neuro-X and PhD programs in computational and quantitative biology, molecular life sciences, biotechnology and bioengineering and in neurosciences. Our research laboratories are headed by more than 50 pioneering faculty and are grouped into five institutes, the Brain Mind Institute, the Swiss Institute of Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC), the Global Health Institute, the Institute of Bioengineering and the Neuro-X Institute. Innovation is at our heart, more than 40 companies were founded based on technologies and knowledge of the School of Life Sciences.
Camille Goemans: The impact of antibiotics on human gut microbes
Abstract:
Over the last century, antibiotics have been one of the main pillars of modern medicine and have considerably contributed to the increase of our life expectancy. However, their overuse combined to the rapid adaptation power of bacteria has led to the emergence of antibiotic resistance and to health issues associated with their impact on the human gut microbiota. In this lecture, Camille discussed how antibiotics impact human gut microbes and touch on the concepts of cross-resistance and collateral sensitivity. In addition, she introduces her and her teams current work on how antibiotics affect diverse bacterial species, how antibiotic resistance emerges and spreads in the gut and strategies to design better treatment.
About the speaker:
Camille Goemans joined EPFL as an Assistant Professor in September 2023. Her lab focuses on understanding how antibiotics affect the diverse bacteria from the human gut microbiota and how they contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance. Camille obtained her Master’s degrees in Biomedical Sciences from the UCLouvain after which she completed her PhD at the de Duve Institute in the laboratory of Prof. Jean-François Collet, studying bacterial responses to stress. She then pursued post-doctoral studies at the EMBL in the laboratory of Dr. Nassos Typas, where she gained expertise into systems biology focusing on the impact of antibiotics on the human gut microbiota.

Vision and Language in Brains and Machines Abstract: While modern machine learning originated from the study of the brain and mind, it has long departed from focusing on the human implementation to intelligence. Today's AI models are thus argued by many to be inconsistent with biology. However, empirical evidence suggests that the latest models converge to surprisingly brain-like solutions. Spe...

This is so cool
Which software you people used for creating the electron density map and as well as refinement model..!?
i love seeing you all again, you're the best! I had enormous fun!
We live in a twilight world.
And there are no friends at dusk.
Yay!
ed meilleur batteur et approvisionneur XD
This is amazing. I have applied for this internship recently. And I'm really nervous as I go through all these videos, kids are from great universities like MIT and Stanford. I come from India where Neuroscience is just still budding and the opportunities are really low compared to other countries. But yes ofc I won't be demotivated if I don't get the internship, will definitely work on how i could expand my approach and knowledge !
Did you get in?
Are you got selected
